Overport karate dojo excels at tournament

Karatekas from the Overport branch of Shotokan Kokusai Karatedo SA (SKKSA) participated at the IFFSKSA Friendly Invitation Tournament.

THE Overport branch of Shotokan Kokusai Karatedo SA (SKKSA) participated at the IFFSKSA Friendly Invitation Tournament, at the Old Mutual Sports Centre UKZN last Saturday.

The club entered 11 of its students, who scooped 12 medals between them. Kelly Kistnasamy and Vikesh Singh both achieved gold medals for kata in the Senior and Veteran’s Divisions respectively, with Riana Singh and Kavish Kumar as well as the youngest member of this dojo, five-year-old Lervel Rabilall, scooping silver medals for kata. Dareh Reddy and Pranav Harijan both won bronze medals in their respective kata divisions.

The students performed equally well in the toughly contested Kumite divisons. Ryan Bastos and Kelly Kistnasamy both won silver medals and Kaveer Kumar and Riana Singh achieved bronze medals for kumite. Little Lervel Rabilall proved she has the makings of an excellent tournament champion as she won her second silver medal for the day in her five-year-old Kumite division.

SKKSA’s Overport dojo instructor, Vibhav Woodhaymal Sensei was justifiably proud of his students who, he said, all worked exceptionally hard to prepare for this event.

“Most of all, my students all showed great respect for their fellow contestants and approached the tournament in the true spirit of friendship. All my students who participated, whether they achieved medals or not, are champions in my dojo,” he said.

SKKSA Overport trains every Tuesday and Thursday, from 5pm to 6.15pm, at the SRS Hall, Harbottle Road.
