PHOTOS: Pitbull Awareness Walk a resounding success

The first Pitbull Awareness Walk KZN went a long way towards changing perceptions of the misunderstood breed at the Durban Beachfront promenade on Saturday morning.

NEARLY fifty heavily muscled pitbull terriers walked along Durban’s beachfront promenade on Saturday morning to restore the “aggressive” nature of the breed.

Nicole Linden, organiser of the Pitbull Awareness Walk KZN event was happy with the turnout despite a very windy morning at the beachfront. “We had an awesome morning and not one incident. “I’m so pleased with everything about the walk,” Linden enthused.

“All participants were great abiding to the long list of rules. The walkers were a bunch of people who really love their dogs and the breed. Owners were so responsible and handled everything so well. The dogs were of course gorgeous and many of them interacted with the public,” she said.

Seelan Gounden, had to calm down his seven month old puppy Tequila because she was so excited to see all the dogs. “She is just playful but people still have that perception that she might hurt when all she wants to do is play,” he said.

A beachfront jogger, Talitha Mayhew, who passed by was smitten by the various pitbulls on the beachfront. “I didn’t realize it was for an awareness event but think its absolutely amazing. They are such beautiful loving animals but sadly so misunderstood, which upsets me so much. I can not wait to get one of my own,” she said on the event’s Facebook page.

Linden thanked the participants for the continued support, photographers who came out to capture the dogs as well as the eThekwini municipality for allowing the event on the promenade. “There will definitely be more awareness walks in future to show that pitbulls are beautiful loving dogs and not the terrors they are reputed to be,” she added.
