Gold Circle announced the 65 horses which will be running in the Champions Season this year.

GOLD Circle launched the opening of this year's Champions Season at a glitzy lunch function at Greyville Racecourse last week.

Speaking at the event, chairperson Phumla Mnganga said the season promised a three month feast of top class racing. “South Africa's Champions Season is the only season where the country's true champions come together to fight for ultimate champion status, and we are privileged to hold an event such as the Vodacom July as well as 58 featured races. These are competitive events with something for everyone. We are dedicated to the promotion of the thoroughbred and invite all to join in the next three months for thoroughbred racing at its highest level and to embrace and celebrate the champions that emerge,” she said.

Graeme Hawkins, marketing executive of Gold Circle, said there would be various changes in the races this season.

“Vodacom has committed to sponsor the event for a further three years, from 2016 to 2018 and have increased the stake for the July to R4 250 000, an increase of R750 000. Jonsson Workwear have a three year agreement and have increased the Garden Province Stakes to R1 million. In recognition of the talent, dedication, integrity, sacrifice and humility of trainer, Mike Bass, who has made an enormous contribution to racing, we are privileged to announce the R1 million Champions Cup will be named in his honour on Super Saturday, and will be the Mike and Carol Bass Champions Cup, bringing down the curtain on the season,” he said.
