Homeless man killed while allegedly trying to get food

He was hit by a car during peak morning traffic.

A homeless man was knocked over and tragically killed on Peter Mokaba (Ridge) Road in peak morning traffic yesterday.

According to Cpt TD Gumede, communications officer at Berea SAPS, the tragedy occurred on Wednesday, which was the municipal garbage collection day, when a resident was busy taking out his rubbish. “It is alleged that a group of homeless people were on across the road during that time. One of the homeless men saw the resident coming out of his yard with the bin bags and allegedly ran across the road, and was run over by an oncoming vehicle,” he explained.

Gumede said witnesses believed the man had run across the road towards the resident in the hopes of getting food or valuables from the resident. The man was approximately 31 year old.

While the driver stopped after the accident, Berea police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
