Provincial commissioner visits family of fallen officer

The cause of the death of Sgt Malcolm Goodwin will be fully investigated by Independent Police Investigative Directorate, says police commissioner.

THE Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni and her management visited the family of Sergeant Malcolm Goodwin at their residence on Ridge Road, Durban on Friday.

Ngobeni personally extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergeant Goodwin of behalf of the management of the SAPS.

Sgt Goodwin was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday 20 January, while attending a tactical intervention exercise at a Pietermaritzburg shooting range.

The death of the popular police officer who was based at the Durban Flying Squad has left colleagues, family and friends shocked and the outpouring of grief still continues in policing circles.

“Sgt Goodwin was a dedicated member who served the community with pride. His death is a loss to the SAPS, his family and the community. His tragic death shocked everyone in the SAPS,” said Ngobeni.

She said the matter will be fully investigated by Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and she had also tasked senior officers in her office to investigate the matter.

“On behalf of the entire SAPS management we convey our sincere condolences to the family and thank them for allowing us the opportunity to see them and comfort them as they grieve. We will ensure that the incident is fully investigated so that the family can get closure. We will also ensure that the family receives counselling from our Employee Health and Wellness officials,” said Ngobeni.
