Arrests and convictions for sex crimes

Excellent results from the Various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KZN, as 203 are arrested and 32 convicted for sexual related cases.

VARIOUS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal have a reason to celebrate results achieved during investigations in this province.

A total of 203 suspects were arrested during the period of the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign which started from 25 November to 10 December.

These suspects were arrested for various crimes such as kidnapping, assaults GBH, domestic violence, protection orders, sexual assault, common robbery, abduction, attempted rape and rape cases. The members secured 32 convictions of which four were life imprisonments.

Major Thulani Zwane from SAPS said it is gladly acknowledged that maximum sentences were handed down in most of these cases and that justice was delivered to the victims.

“Our officers also embarked on various crime awareness campaigns through the province educating the community about any form of abuse against women and children,” he said.

Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded these successes with a sense of accomplishment and expressed her confidence in the judicial system which has meted out befitting sentences to rapists.

“The sentences handed down will send a clear message to would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and make sure that they present a thoroughly investigated dockets to courts for prosecution. KwaZulu-Natal police will endeavour with all its resources to prevent crimes against women and children and make the province a safer place for everyone,” she said.
