Tree of Light shines again

Jameson Park was filled with the Christmas spirit and the memory of loved ones on Friday night at the Highway Hospice Tree of Light switch on ceremony.

EMOTIONS ran high as the Highway Hospice Tree of Light was officially switched on at Jameson Park on Friday night.

This year saw entertainer, Bernie Davenport from the Deez and Beez, who usually is on stage entertaining the crowd, selected by Hospice to officially switch on the giant tree. “I was feeling sad because I couldn't do the the entertainment this time after ten years because I had a node removed from my vocal chords. Switching the tree on really made up for it,” he added.

Hospice invited Davenport to switch on the tree along with Maria Marais, a young mother of two who recently lost her husband to a brain tumour. “It is a real privilege and honour to have switched on the tree lights. It made me feel like my husband Johannes is up there looking down on me and proud. This was for him, I am a shy person and he always believed in me and supported me,” an emotional Marais said after the switch on ceremony.

Marais added that her husband's memory lives on in her two blessings, Tiaan (8) and Xander (4).
