SAPS mourns death of fellow officer

Injured Durban Flying Squad member, Ashok Ramsakkan, (53), has died in hospital.

A DURBAN Flying Squad member who was wounded in a shooting incident in KwaMashu, died in hospital on Monday evening.

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker from SAPS, on Sunday 15 November, members of the Durban Flying Squad were on duty in a marked vehicle patrolling along Malandela Road when they noticed a silver Corsa with no canopy travelling in front of them.

“Three male occupants who were seated at the rear of the vehicle suddenly stood up and produced rifles. The suspects opened fire on the police vehicle and Warrant Officer Ashok Ramsakkan was shot in the neck. He was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention and remained in a critical condition for over a week,” said Naicker.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Warrant Officer Ramsakkan. You will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of your lives. We pray that the love of God enfolds the family, friends and colleagues of Warrant Officer Ramsakkan during this period of mourning,” said the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

She said she was confident that the case would be investigated effectively and those responsible would be brought to book.

“The attack on police officers either on or off-duty must be condemned by all law abiding citizens as it is not only barbaric but also robs the country of SAPS personnel who have the responsibility to fight crime and protect the citizens of our country,” said Ngobeni.
