Gay comments ‘disturbing’, says DA

The leader of one of the biggest churches in the country has blamed gay men for the current drought crippling the province.

THE DA in KwaZulu-Natal has lashed out at a comment made by the leader of the Shembe church on the weekend, calling the comments made by Mduduzi Shembe ‘disturbing’.

DA KZN leader, Zwakele Mncwango, was speaking after Shembe said that the drought that has gripped the province of KwaZulu-Natal was because of gay men. Shembe apparently said: “Men are now marrying men and that is why we are currently facing the curse of a hot sun and drought.”

Mncwango in a statement said: “If these remarks are true, we find them not only  irresponsible but also inflammatory. In a society that respects and obey the leaders’ orders, it will be rather disturbing when a leader makes such remarks. This automatically puts every gay person in danger to be attacked for ‘causing drought’ in the province.”

The Shembe church has over one million followers country-wide but its stronghold is in KwaZulu-Natal.
