According to the DA’s Zwakele Mncwango, it months have passed since a decision was taken that the City hires its own VIP unit in order to save millions through payingprivate security companies. “We do not understand the hold up by the City
Manager on this issue and we want an immediate action to be taken. Currently it costs the Council more than R210 000 a month to secure one councillor a month. The City spends a ridiculous R4 million a month in providing security for councillors,” he said.
“Today (Wednesday, 11 November) the security guards are out on the street protesting over payments. No one is guarding the so called “high risk” councillors which means that work is not being done. The absence of councillors means that service delivery to the people is affected. We will not tolerate this delay any longer,”he said.
