It’s Movember time again

Show your support for men's health issues this year by participating in Movember.

EVERY year in the month of November, millions of men from around the world grow a moustache to show support and raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues, which include prostate and testicular cancer as well as men’s mental health and physical inactivity.

One of Movember’s aims is to vanquish the stigma attached to these diseases that affect men and to get men to talk about them as early detection is key and can save lives. CEO and founder of the Men’s Foundation Garron Gsell explained: “The theme for this year’s Movember is Shaped By Experience, which means that if you choose to live a healthy lifestyle as well as being alert to the warning signs, you can help shape your own future.

”Men are encouraged to join other Mo Bros by signing up at www.movember.com, and when 1 November comes around make sure you are clean shaven and proceed to grow and groom a moustache for the remainder of the month. As well as growing a “mo,” Mo Bros must encourage others to do the same and get involved in private and public conversations about issues surrounding men’s health which are often ignored.

In addition to awareness and education generated from the Movember campaign, the funds raised are used to fund survivorship and research programs. The programs are equipped to provide men with the best treatment options available. Internationally the Movember foundation has managed to acquire many medical minds to assist in the cause, including urologists, oncologists, sexologists and general health practitioners.

The Foundation has partnered with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) to formulate local programs to help men in the country. These programs are currently in the developmental stages. By partnering with SADAG this year, the Movember Foundation aims to tackle mental health issues.

“Globally, suicide is the biggest killer of men aged 20 to 39, with three quarter of all suicides being men. We hope to challenge the idea that a ‘strong’ man is the only way to be ‘manly’ and challenge the notion that men talking and showing emotion is ‘weak’,” Ceo Gsell explained.
