Positive move forward for derelict houses

Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, has breathed a sigh of relief as work has begun on derelict properties in Morningside.

THERE has been some positive movement in the area regarding the state of derelict houses, with six properties in the Berea area being examples of owners taking responsibility for their property.

Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, was pleased with the progress of these six properties, where he said owners were showing community involvement.

“The properties are being fixed for the betterment of the buildings and the community as a whole, and I thank the owners who are fixing up or demolishing and rebuilding, where applications have been granted,” he said.

The properties being attended to were ones in 9th Avenue and Madeline Road, Morningside, which have been featured in the Berea Mail recently – two in Henwood Road, Morningside, which have been a problem for many years, and one in Hollander Crescent, Morningside.

Meyer said there were a number of other houses in the area which were still in a sorry state; however, with the implementation of the new by-law on derelict properties, which is to come into play on 1 November, there will be increases in fines for owners of 'bad' buildings.
