School leaders chosen

Learner Leaders were chosen at Glenmore Primary School on Friday.

GLENMORE Primary School held a special assembly on Friday, to honour its mentors and learner leaders.

According to principal, David Spiteri, the school has moved from a system of prefectship to leadership, where mentors are chosen to help other pupils in their life at the school.

“We start forming these pupils at the beginning of the year, through discussion, mentorship and observation. The children are given an opportunity to lead and guide pupils, and are observed by Grade 7 teachers. We choose a group of children who are ready to lead, under the guidance of these three teachers,” he said.

Another group of pupils who are not yet ready to be learner leaders are chosen as monitors. They are given the opportunity to move to leadership through the next few months of school.

Mr Spiteri said Mrs Rowena Walker was the most instrumental in the formation of leadership over the years, and he said her words, reliability, responsibility and respect, had become part of the school ethos.

Monitors and learner leaders were called up to the stage to be recognised, and deputy head and head leaders were announced.

The deputy heads are Buhle Nxumalo and Banoyolo Sicwebu, and the head leaders are Tariq Mahebeer Smith and Ntobeko Gumede.
