Armed robbers nabbed in stop and search

Four men who had just robbed a business in Congella were caught by the police in a stop and search operation in KwaMashu.

UMBILO SAPS arrested suspects fleeing from the scene of a business robbery in a stop-and-search operation on 1 July.

According to Lt Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, the four men, aged between 33 and 37 years old, burst into a business in Congella at around 11.30am, armed with guns and demanded valuables and cash from the staff.

“The men fled with cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash and got into a public taxi which was going in the direction of KwaMashu,” she said.

A stop-and-search operation was being undertaken by the KwaMashu police, and the taxi was stopped.

“The woman from the business decided to call her cellphone to see what would happen, and it was answered by the police. She told them what was going on, then went to the Umbilo SAPS to report the incident. The police then rushed to KwaMashu and the men were arrested after being identified from CCTV footage,” she said.

The men were charged with business robbery.

In light of the recent kidnapping in Glenwood, Lt Makaula said people shouldn't be jogging alone and should be jogging in groups or with a running partner.

“Avoid running when it is dark and do not run or walk with earphones in your ears as you will not be able to hear anyone approach you,” she said.
