Car guard project launched

Car attendants wearing bright yellow bibs will be stationed along Erskine Terrace in Durban to help curb crime.

A NEW car attendant project was launched at Addington Beach last week to help prevent theft out of, and of cars, malicious damage to property, robberies and theft along Erskine Terrace.

This is a joint partnership between Point SAPS, Durban Marine Life Surfing Club, Silversands, the Sector 2 Sub CPF, Metro Police, Isidingo Security and the car attendants appointed to work in the area.

The partnership aims to establish informer networks and allow the police to work in close co-operation with the local community.

The idea to implement the project came from national instruction that the sector commander should initiate, develop and implement crime prevention partnership programmes and projects in the sector based on identified needs, and to facilitate the development and implementation of crime prevention operations to address specific crime trends and problems in the area.

Crime trends from December 2014 to March 2015 in the area showed incidences of theft out of motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, attempted theft from motor vehicle and theft from motor vehicle, although stats did seem to show a decrease.

With the help of the new car attendants, the SAPS are hoping these stats will show a further decrease.
