Talk focuses on leopard conservation

Conservationist Tristan Dickerson of Panthera will speak on leopard conservation in South Africa at the next BotSoc meeting.

THE Botanical Society of SA KZN coastal branch will host an illustrated talk by conservationist Tristan Dickerson of Panthera on leopard conservation in South Africa on Monday 29 June at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre, at 6pm.

With leopards being the most persecuted big cat in the world, special efforts are needed to conserve this species. Panthera has focused the last 12 years on studying leopards in South Africa and using science and some out-of-the-box solutions to conserve leopards.

Tristan will give a background on previous leopard persecution in South Africa, followed by protocol changes and solutions that have had positive impacts on populations. The presentation will include the world famous Furs For Life Panthera project which developed a faux leopard skin worn by many followers of the Shembe Church.

Entrance, including refreshments, costs R35 for members of BotSoc and the Friends of Durban Botanic Gardens, R45 for visitors and R25 for students with cards.

Pay at the door. Proceeds will go to BotSoc branch projects.

No bookings required. For enquiries, email: botsoc-kzn@mweb.co.za, contact 031 201 5111 or 071 869 3693.
