Strikers demand impounded taxis be released

Protesting Durban taxi operators have gathered at the old Durban Drive In site and are demanding authorities release the taxis impounded at the site.

SCORES of Durban taxi owners and drivers marched through the city’s CBD this morning stoning municipal cars and burning tyres as they went.

The protesters have now congregated at the old Drive-In site where a fleet of impounded minibus taxis stand under police guard.

Workers in the taxi industry expressed anger at metro police, claiming traffic laws target them unfairly.

They are demanding that authorities release more than 200 taxis impounded by metro police.

Police blocked roads in the strikers’ vicinity to protect motorists from coming under attack.
