Talented cricketers awarded

The KZNCU and DDCU rewarded talented cricketers at its Annual Awards recently.

THE KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) and the Durban and Districts Cricket Union (DDCU) rewarded talented local cricketers at their Annual Awards ceremony for the 2014 2015 season.

The function was a glamorous affair as the two unions recognised the achievements of cricket players from in and around Durban.

Prestigious guests who attended were Mayor James Nxumalo and guest of honour, Oregan Hoskins, the current President of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

Fa-eez Jaffar, President of KZNCU said: “Tonight is a small token of appreciation to thank our players, clubs, and administrators for another successful season. I would like to thank everyone who has assisted in taking the game of cricket to new heights. I applaud all administrators for making an effort of keeping their clubs a float in these tough economic times. Special mention to Crusaders Cricket Club for raising the KZNCU Club Cricket Flag high at the Club Championship.”

He said he also appreciated the contribution of sponsors, who were invested in the growth of cricket in the province.

DDCU President, Rajesh Sookhay said: “The Durban and Districts Cricket Union being the largest affiliate to the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union is fully committed to the value of Club cricket and will always endeavour to keep the culture of cricket alive within a community base. We will continue to put as much as possible into the Club's that are affiliated to the Union as the crux of the work of promoting the game remains vested in the hands of these Clubs.”

He said the awards evening celebrated on an annual basis goes beyond a celebration of winners but encapsulates the recognition of people that have worked together as a unit to give recognition to the true spirit of cricket.

Captain, Morne van Wyk walked away with Dolphins Player of the Season and Andre Pretorius was honored by KZNCU President, Faeez Jaffar, with the KZN Presidents Awards for his contribution to the development of cricket in KZN rural areas.

Glenwood High School pupil Nduduzo Mfoza picked up the Township U17 player of the season award and Glenwood's Daelon Fynn picked up the KZN U15 player of the year award. This is a great achievement by these young players.

“Awards events are such memorable occasions. It is a time for us to look back at the season past, and recognize the valuable contributions made not only by our cricketers, but also the support structures that make cricket in our province possible. This includes our coaches, ground staff, umpires, scorers and administrators,” said Pete de Wet, CEO of KZNCU.
