Durban hosts beach soccer tourney

The inaugural beach soccer tournament in Durban has fully met the high expectations.

TOP level beach soccer action was brought to Durban this month, with the successful Power Horse African Trophy.

At Durban’s South Beach, more than 10 000 fans followed three days of outstanding football and enjoyed hot local music acts, sizzling cheerleaders, and numerous action-packed activities.

The crowd celebrated Senegal’s Teranga Sand Lions, who won the premier 5-4 in an exciting final against Côte d’Ivoire. Host nation South Africa came fourth going down to favourites Nigeria 3-9 in the bronze medal game.

Ghana, Morocco, Mozambique and the Seychelles also used the stage to showcase their skills and prepare for the upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2015 African Qualifier in April.

Joan Cusco, Beach Soccer Worldwide executive vice-president, was delighted by the event’s success.

“The Power Horse Beach Soccer African Trophy in Durban was a great tournament and I am convinced it will become a key event on the continent for years to come,” she said.

In the next couple of weeks, Power Horse and Beach Soccer Worldwide will be donating two full beach soccer pitches to run activations all year round and to make beach soccer a safe and fun activity.
