Langeler Towers on track

The building of TAFTA's newest building, Langeler Towers, is going well, with only six floors to go.

THERE’S much excitement at Tafta as construction on its Langeler Towers moves steadily ahead and is on track for completion by 10 November.

According to CEO, Margie Smith, handover and occupation dates are to be confirmed closer to the time. “The 6th floor of the building has been poured with preparations for the 7th floor underway,” she said.

“Langeler Towers has reached the fifth storey with six more to go. The first of the newly renovated rooms on the upper floors of John Conradie House are almost ready for occupation and residents will be moving in soon. We are fundraising tirelessly to make sure that they will be beautifully furnished,” she said.

She said the total funds required to complete Langer Towers were all but raised, with a little under R4m still required of the initial R100m.
“The funds still required to complete John Conradie House stand at R36m of the total requirement of R57m,” she said.

The renovated John Conradie House (JCH) is being handed back to TAFTA in a phased manner as completed rooms are furnished. The 62 residents living in the lower four floors of the long wing of JCH running parallel to Bell Street will be the first to move into the newly renovated sections.

Of the 134 residents who previously lived in JCH and who are currently re-housed in other TAFTA accommodation or with family, 74 will be moved back into the renovated sections over the course of the next six to eight weeks. The final renovations to JCH will be completed by late November this year, making room for the last 60 residents to return to JCH.

“There is also a fundraising drive currently underway to furnish each of the rooms for the residents returning to John Conradie House, and to that end, a fun walk is taking place on Saturday 21 March at Durban beachfront,” she said.
