firearm recovered

BEREA police prevented a would be car theft by arresting two thieves in the act last week.

Constables Mkhize and Dlamini were patrolling in Morningside at about 5am on Thursday when they responded to a complaint of an attempted theft of motor vehicle in Montpelier Road. “They responded and noticed two unknown men trying to break into a parked silver car. When the suspects saw the police they fled but were promptly arrested,” said Berea Communications Officer Lieutenant PN Naidoo.

After searching the two suspects, a firearm was recovered with ammunition. The two suspects who were approximately 25-years-old were charged with attempted theft of motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. They were detained at Berea SAPS.

Hosepipe thief arrested

Berea police are trying to curb petty theft in the area ensuring all thieves are brought to book.

Last Thursday officers on patrol noticed a suspicious man carrying a packet and walking along Riley Road. “They stopped and searched him and checked the packet and found a hosepipe. He was questioned about the hosepipe and could not give a reasonable explanation for it. After enquiries were made in the area it was established that the hosepipe was stolen from a property in Riley Road,” explained Naidoo.

The complainant opened a case of theft and the suspect was charged for theft and detained at Berea SAPS.

Awareness

LT PN Naidoo makes an urgent appeal to the public not to fall for scams that are doing the rounds.

“We have noticed that people are buying items online and later realise that it is a scam. Please verify that the advert is legitimate before depositing money into someone's account as once the deposit is made the person disappears and cannot be traced,” he warned

The public is once again reminded not to use isolated ATMS. “ATMS on the roadside or in garages must not be used when suspicious people are loitering around as you could place yourself in danger. These criminals will rob you or steal your card,” he warned.
