Festive season operation keeps beaches safe

Point police embarked on a pre-festive vehicle check point operation at Bay Terrace on Friday.

POINT police embarked on a pre-festive season operation to ensure safety in the South Beach area on Friday, 5 December.

According to Captain Bheki Simelane, communications officer at Point SAPS, the vehicle check point (VCP) operation on Friday morning was held to ensure locals and holiday makers are safe at the beach. “We held the VCP close to the festive period so people will know to ensure their car safety over the festive season. Our members checked drivers and car licences, car roadworthiness, and for weapons,” he explained.

At least 100 cars passed through on Friday, most of them were company vehicles delivering goods to businesses in the area with some visitors to the beach. “Most of the people were law abiding citizens, even the foreigners carried their international road traffic registration number and permit,” Simelane said.

A taxi full of school teachers and young pupils was stopped for overcrowding, and a few over-due car licences were noticed and since there is no longer a 21-day grace period, drivers were fined. “People must realise the law has changed and there is no 21-day period in which to renew your licence once the date has passed. You will be fined so ensure licences are renewed,” warned Simelane.
