Natal Settlers plans bigger, better nursing facilities

Plans have been submitted to make better training facilities at Natal Settlers Homes.

THE Natal Settlers Memorial Homes (NSMH) is looking forward to better facilities, and better training for nurses and care givers in the near future.

Plans have been submitted to the Municipality and fundraising has started for an ambitious project to renovate an entire building to be used for training.

The Natal Settlers Nursing School is part of the NSMH and is responsible for running South African Nursing Council approved courses. The school is accredited to train enrolled nursing auxilliaries, and currently there are two groups of 30 student nurses completing this one year course.

The NSMH also runs courses to train home based carers and ward hostesses and at any time between 90 and 250 students are enrolled in these courses.

The student nurses and carers get hands on experience at the homes assisting with frail and infirm residents and patients.

Student nurses are also posted to nearby public and private hospitals for additional practical experience.

The NSMH is committed to improving the quality of nursing and care education, and appeals to the public to support the project.

“We appeal to members of the public who are interested in supporting the school or donating to the project to make contact with us”, said Warwick Chapman, chairperson of the NSMH.
