What to do in Durban: Beyond the Beach

Durban is known for its beachfront culture, but there is so much more on offer along Durban's Green Corridor.

WHEN planning your weekend activities with family and friends do you automatically think of the beach? Naturally you would as we all know Durban’s beaches are stunning year round. But did you know that Durban has a secret?!

There is something new that Durban has to offer and still relatively undiscovered. How many of our fellow South Africans actually know that Durban can offer so much more ‘beyond the beach’. On the city’s doorstep lies a winding majestic river, dramatic waterfalls, gorges, cliffs, dams, caves, rolling green hills and a world of bird life including the illusive African Finfoot so if you and your friends can peel yourselves away from the sand for just a morning or afternoon, you will discover something magical and revitalising in a very different environment. A place of tranquillity and peacefulness, away from the crowded beaches, malls and streets. A little piece of heaven – The Umngeni River Valley.

Durban Green Corridor

Families, couples and individuals alike are always seeking affordable and different things to do and Durban can offer exactly that. Canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, nature walks, traditional Zulu cultural experiences and beautiful picnic spots not more than a 40 minute easy drive from the city centre and among some breath taking scenery and natural beauty. The kids can enjoy a guided mountain bike ride while mum and dad relax with a picnic by the dam.

Durban Green Corridor has 3 breath-taking sites offering a range of adventure and eco-tourism and leisure activities for the whole family including Umngeni Adventures at Blue Lagoon, at Inanda Dam (30 minute drive) and in the Valley of a Thousand Hills (45 minute drive). All sites are easily accessible, safe and offer all basic facilities including safe parking, security, toilets, refreshments and the option of pre-ordered catering or picnics. Tour guides are knowledgeable and experienced. The exact site locations and GOS coordinates can be found at www.durbangreencorridor.co.za but the main booking office is The Green Hut at Blue Lagoon, 31 Stiebel Place, Durban. Right at the river’s estuary.

It is just R20 to visit one of the sites (eNanda Adventures & iSithumba Adventures) and simply relax there and enjoy the scenery and another R20 to use the mountain bike/hiking trails using your own equipment. The main booking office is open from 8am-4.30pm (Mon-Fri) and 9am-5pm (Sat/Sunday) and can be contacted on 31 322 6026/7 or info@durbangreencorridor.co.za for more information.
