Brutal murder shocks Musgrave

The Morningside and Musgrave community is shocked by the brutal killing of a woman opposite Jameson Park.

BEREA police stumbled upon the body of a brutally murdered woman believed to be a vagrant early this morning.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, spokesman of Berea SAPS, officers were doing normal patrols along Florida Road when they noticed a person covered with plastic lying in the vacant land at corner of Florida and Musgrave Roads opposite Jameson Park.

“They went to investigate  and discovered the body of a woman who was around 40 years old.” The woman had been brutally murdered and her body was left clothed only from the waist up.

Naidoo confirmed that the woman had been hit on the head with a blunt object and her genitalia had been mutilated with the neck of a broken bottle. He said people who lived in the area confirmed that the woman was a known homeless person who was a regular sight in the neighbourhood and who appeared to live in the area.

“At this time we do not know the next of kin but would appreciate if the community could assist in tracing the woman’s family,” added Naidoo.

Curious and shocked residents looked on from a distance as police members, pathologists and mortuary personnel worked on the scene.

One resident who refused to be named said the brutality of the murder sounded like a ‘muti killing’, however Lt Naidoo refuted it, saying ‘there was no motive at the moment and police would investigate further and not speculate.’
