St John Ambulance to offer free eye-screening for World Sight Day

To encourage people to get their eyes tested in commemoration of World Sight Day, celebrated on October 12, they will be offering free eye tests and a chance to win free spectacles.

ST JOHN Ambulance and Eye Care – one of the oldest and most respected non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the world – will be offering free eye screenings in collaboration with South Africa’s national radio station, Lotus FM, at the SABC Durban Studios on Thursday, October 12 from 09:00 until 12:00.

The free eye screening will include a basic visual- and ocular-health screening.

Everybody who participates will be entered into a draw to stand the chance to win an eye test and spectacles with tint, compliments of the non-profit organisation, St John South Africa.

World Sight Day, held every year on the second Thursday in October, is the most important advocacy and communications day in the eye-health calendar to encourage people to be aware of eye care. This year’s theme is ‘Love your Eyes’ because 75% of the world’s vision impairment is avoidable, so the focus globally is to encourage people to take an eye test.

The International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has launched its annual campaign in the lead-up to World Sight Day on October 12, with its key theme, ‘Love your Eyes at Work’, focusing on eye health in the workplace – especially with so much work time typically being spent in front of a screen.

St John has an Eye Care Clinic located at 129 KE Masinga Road / Old Fort Road, Durban – a stone’s throw away from SABC – which provides professional eye testing and the dispensing of budget spectacles.

A bookseller from the Denis Hurley Centre Street Lit project – one of the CSI (Corporate Social Investment) partners of St John – will be at the event with a table of affordable quality books for listeners to purchase. One of the joys of good eyesight is the ability to enjoy reading a book!
