Dead tree a safety hazard in Berea

Verdon says he has lived in Berea for more than 15 years and has seen accidents that have been caused by dead tree branches falling on the road, or worse, onto people’s cars.

BEREA resident Linton Verdon is appealing to the City to remove a tree located on Bulwer Road that he suspects is dead down to the roots, which poses a major safety risk for pedestrians and drivers.

Verdon says he lives near where the tree sits and frequents Bulwer Road, along with many other road users. “I drive along Bulwer Road about two to three times a week because I live nearby. I noticed this tree about two and a half weeks ago, and every time I drive past, it looks even worse. There are a lot of smaller branches that have already fallen, but it’s clear that this tree is dead all the way down to the brittle trunk, and very soon, I think one of the heavier branches will fall and seriously injure a pedestrian or driver.”

Verdon says he has lived in Berea for more than 15 years and has seen accidents that have been caused by dead tree branches falling on the road, or worse, onto people’s cars, which have caused serious injuries and sometimes even fatal injuries.

“With the tree being on such a busy road, I strongly feel it needs to be removed before someone gets hurt. There are schools near this road – it could happen to anyone at any time – we don’t know when, so before tragedy strikes, this tree should be removed,” concluded Verdon.

The eThekwini Municipality was not available for comment at the time of going to print.
