City runs clean-up drive at taxi ranks

The campaign, led by the eThekwini Transport Authority, is part of the City’s efforts to regenerate the CBD and aims to repair broken infrastructure, clean-up the ranks and ensure that the facility is up to standard for commuters.

THE City recently released a statement announcing that a multidisciplinary team has begun an intensive week-long campaign to clean up taxi ranks in the bustling Durban Central Business District (CBD), starting on August 7.

The campaign, led by the eThekwini Transport Authority, is part of the City’s efforts to regenerate the CBD and aims to repair broken infrastructure, clean-up the ranks and ensure that the facility is up to standard for commuters.

Teams were on the ground on August 7 cleaning up the Lorne Street, Mansfield and Centenary taxi ranks in the CBD. According to the Municipality, other taxi ranks in the City will be cleaned during the course of the week.

Next week, the campaign will be extended to focus on the Dalton and Umngeni areas.

City employees attended to plumbing faults, illegal dumping, unblocked drains as well as repaired faulty electrical equipment and damaged/vandalised infrastructure.

As part of the campaign, Metro Police carried out enforcement action against those contravening by-laws in the vicinity. The City also partnered with the Department of Home Affairs to offer assistance to the homeless and conducted educational talks with commuters.

The City calls on commuters to look after the facilities provided for their benefit. Vandalism of infrastructure remains a serious challenge which costs the City millions of rand to repair.
