Family bid farewell to activist

the memorial service takes place on Saturday August 5 at Sastri College Hall Time at 14:00. 

A MEMORIAL service will be held in memory of Dr Farooq Meer who fought in the struggle against apartheid. The activist passed away among family and friends at the age of 85 on July 22.

A dedicated family man, Meer leaves behind wife, Rasheeda, children, Nadia, Razina, Ziad and Bilal, grandsons, Suhayl, Sameer, Mikail, Daniel, Khalil and Zaki and great-grandchildren, Jahaan and Ruhaan.

“He was comfortably at home surrounded by family he loved. He was a medical professional who led a life of service with integrity and commitment. Despite being harassed and repeatedly jailed, [Meer] worked tirelessly as a dedicated member of numerous community and civic organisations. He served leadership roles in many historic campaigns in the struggle against apartheid,” said daughter Nadia.

Nadia described her father as a stalwart of the Congress movement, who remained an outspoken critic of the politics that plagued the post apartheid government.

Meer has been laid to rest alongside his eldest sister Fatima Meer at Brooke Street Cemetary and is mourned by extended family, many friends, comrades and colleagues.

“Our family is grateful for the prayers and many inspired, heartfelt messages; that he will be remembered and missed by so many, gives our family strength over this difficult time,” said Nadia.

She added that Meer was highly respected in the many sectors he worked in, including the healthcare sector, and community and political organisations.

Friends to the Meer family, together with activists and stalwarts who worked alongside him in the NIC, UDF, ANC will pay tribute to him on Saturday August 5 at Sastri College Hall Time at 14:00.

The memorial is a fitting tribute to remember a selfless individual who worked tirelessly in contributing towards a democratic country and a decent life for all citizens,” said Nadia.

Some of the keynote speakers at the memorial include Popo Molefe, Ela Gandhi, Pravin Gordhan and Sandy Africa, amongst others.
