Durban to crown gospel-music icon this weekend

As the grand finale draws near on June 11, it's nearly time to crown this year’s Durban Gospel Icon winner.

WITH the finale fast approaching on June 11, the top three finalists are hard at work, training with experienced gospel artists to bring their best to the stage.

This follows the Gospel Icon Discovery Talent Search auditions in March and April. The finalists, Sindi Ngidi, Neliswa Dlamini, and Neli Sikhosana, were among hundreds of aspiring singers who took part in auditions.

And the stakes are certainly high as the winner of the competition stands the chance of walking away with a cash prize, a recording deal, and the opportunity to be further mentored by established artists in the industry.

Head of the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture Unit Dr Simphiwe Ndlovu said excitement was mounting ahead of the finale.

“The City has amazing talent, which was evidenced by the talented youth who auditioned for the Gospel Icon Discovery. The passion contestants displayed has been wonderful to see. They are ready to work hard and enter the creative-sector industry,” said Ndlovu.

He added that some of the talented youth who auditioned will have the opportunity to feature on the albums of established gospel artists.

As a City programme, the Gospel Icon Discovery aims to support the participation of the youth.
