SAPS intercept car chase, recover unlicensed firearms

The suspect claimed to be a security officer on duty but could not produce identification.

POLICE were patrolling in central Durban when they spotted suspicious activity and arrested one suspect (26) with an unlicensed firearm on Sunday, May 14.

According to Durban Central SAPS spokesperson, Captain Muzi Maphumulo, the suspect was intercepted by police during a car chase.

“The suspect was chasing a Quantum Taxi when intercepted by the Durban Central Field Unit,” said Maphumulo.

SAPS stopped the suspect who was driving a white Suzuki Swift.

“Members found the suspect in possession of a Norinco rifle with 30 rounds of live ammunition. After further searching the vehicle, members found a revolver with five rounds of live ammunition,” said Maphumulo.

He added that the suspect claimed to be a security officer but did not have any identification.

“The suspect did not possess a licence or a competency to possess the said firearms. After further questioning, he alleged he was an armed guard on duty,” said Ma[phumulo.

“He could not produce any permit or licence for the rifle found in his possession. He stated that it was left in a vehicle by his colleague,” explained Maphumulo.

The suspect was placed under arrest, and the firearms and ammunition were seized. The suspect was detained at Durban Central SAPS
