Sports fans won't want to miss the upcoming tournament - the playoffs and finals will take place on Saturday.

THE KwaZulu Natal Softball Association will host the National Softball Provincial Championships at Hoy Park Sportsground from Tuesday, March 21, until Saturday, March 25.

The playoffs and finals will take place on Saturday, and there will be an opening ceremony and prize-giving. The public is invited to spectate throughout the tournament – there is no entry fee.

“The tournament is for seniors – although we do have a lot of scholars playing in our senior (adult) league,” he added.

Jenner said there are several teams involved in KZN Softball.

“We have a senior league based in eThekwini which plays from August to October and January to March. We also have a KZN schools league based primarily in Durban. These league games are played from July to September,” he said.

Heading beyond Durban, Jenner said that the University of Zululand joined KZN Softball in the first half of the season.

“We also have junior clubs made up of homeschooled children based in our Midlands Region. We also have a home for the disabled in Howick who have three teams,” he said.

Jenner believes KZN softball was established in the1940s. “I recently saw a newspaper clipping of the South African Softball Association being formed in March 1949 with its first president being a Mr Bill Murray-Brown from Natal,” he said.
