Municipality launches 13-precinct-wide city clean-up

eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda launched a massive two-day clean-up that will see 13 precincts in eThekwini spruced up by multiple municipal teams.

AS part of a media briefing given today by the eThekwini Muncipality Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, to inform residents of what occurred during the festive season and the initiatives the City has planned for the New Year, the mayor discussed the launch of a major cleaning campaign that kicked off today in the Durban CBD.

In an effort to spruce up the city centre, several municipal teams commenced a two-day clean-up this morning that will target 13 precincts in eThekwini. According to Mayor Kaunda, the municipal team will target the following areas: the Central Business District, City Hall, the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Complex, Albert Park, Warwick Avenue, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Point Road, South Beach, North Beach, Umgeni, Musgrave, Greyville and Dalton Hostel.

The mayor has put in place a comprehensive operational plan that will focus on the following activities:

  • Blocked drains
  • Overgrown grass
  • Overgrown trees
  • Street-lighting
  • Unauthorized building works
  • Water and sewage leaks
  • Enforcement of by-laws
  • Bad buildings
  • Traffic congestion
  • Open trenches on sidewalks
  • Potholes
  • Damaged manhole covers
  • Homelessness
  • Illegal dumping

Kaunda says teams are on the ground identifying challenges in other precincts, particularly in the secondary CBDs, which include Pinetown, Isiphingo, Verulam and oThongathi.

“We are pleased to report that our cleaning campaign is beginning to yield positive results as the levels of cleanliness have improved in some parts of the CBD. The campaign we have launched today will be complemented by an intensive education drive to encourage residents to keep their environment clean,” said Kaunda.
