Support charities to make Christmas dreams come true

Support charity-organised events this festive season to help the marginalised celebrate Christmas, too. Find out how you can support some of them and make a difference this holiday season.

TODAY marks the second day we have officially entered the festive month of December. This season is known to be about family and friends getting together to celebrate the end of the year and welcome a new one. This is also a season of celebration and giving. Santa is all over Durban through charities and giving everyone a chance to smile this Christmas.

We look at some charities in Durban that have extended their help to the people who celebrate Christmas differently due to unfortunate circumstances. These charities have set up programmes that will be reaching out to those in need.

Classic Bicycle Christmas Hat Ride

TO kickstart things, Durban cyclists will be on their bikes with the mission to collect toys for the St Giles NPO. The NPO is a remedial therapy centre where people with disabilities access quality rehabilitative treatment. It also has a work centre that employs 75 disabled staff members who package products for several companies.

This will be the fourth annual Classic Bicycle Christmas Hat Ride and toy collection. The cycling charity event that will be taking place on December 11 in the Durban’s Point area is organised by Eric Prinsloo, who is the founder of Classic Steel Vintage Cycling. In this charity event, cyclists participating are required to bring toys that will be donated to St Giles NPO, and some toys will be sold for donations to the same organisation. And the cyclists get to wear Christmas hats, too!

El Gibbor Kitchen

THE El Gibbor Kitchen in Pinetown will be stretching their hands out to the homeless people. With their collection having started in September already, the organisation will be giving out hampers to the homeless during this season.

The organisation is calling on the public to help them collect items for the Christmas hampers. Each hamper consists of the following items that the public can donate: Cans of baked beans, mixed veg and tuna, a loaf of bread, a litre of milk, a can of jam, instant porridge, a litre of concentrated juice and a packet of large chips. These products can be dropped off at 37 Bamboo Lane, Pinetown. The date of the reach-out is yet to be announced.

The Baby Home

INthe same vein as their speciality with babies, The Baby Home will be hosting the Christmas for a Cause family show. The show that will be on the 17th of December is set to see the community enjoy Christmas songs performed by a band and vocalists. The community is invited to pay R100 for the show whose proceeds will contribute to The Baby Home and allow the babies housed there to have a memorable Christmas. Christmas for a Cause is set to take place at Redwood College in La Lucia.

Durbanites are invited to come out in their numbers and join the good cause of making this season memorable for all parts of the community.
