Pigeon Valley UIP calls for objectors to come forward

Glenwood residents have been pledging their interest and support for the formation of the Pigeon Valley Urban Improvement Precinct, and the voting period has now ended. It is now in the objection period and residents are allowed to send in their objections to the formation of the organisation.

A GROUP of residents concerned with the decline of their suburb have been campaigning for the past few months to set up an Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) for improving Glenwood from a safety, cleanliness and service-management perspective as has been done in uMhlanga, Kloof and Florida Road. Local Glenwood residents have been pledging their interest and support for the formation of the Pigeon Valley Urban Improvement Precinct (PVUIP), and the voting period has now ended. Glenwood resident Karen Brokensha said that the steering committee has been hard at work, networking with street and flat representatives and neighbours to inform, inspire and encourage them to vote in favour of the public/private partnership. Since the voting period ended, the PVUIP has started the process of applying to the municipality to become a Special Rated Area (SRA) after achieving 66% + 1 of Residential Properties and 51% of Business and Commercial Properties – these results coming from the Glenwood residents and businesses who approve of the establishment of the PVUIP in their area. However, not all those who are based in Glenwood approve of the PVUIP being formed.

Glenwood property owner Alan Tintinger voted against the formation, with his opinion being that the PVUIP is not suited for the purpose. “I voted no and encourage all other residents to do so. It is merely putting a ‘Band-Aid’ on a wound and not treating the disease. We already pay excessive rates – why should we pay even more to get those same essential services?” questioned Tintinger.

Tintinger instead suggested the formation of another organisation. “I believe we need a Glenwood/Umbilo Ratepayers Association. The extra rates we are being asked to condone will be with us forever! It is nonsense. There is no accountability, and we should get what we pay for!”

The PVUIP is now in the objection period – any residents who strongly object to the formation of the organisation and who would like to fill out an objection form, should visit www.pigeonvalleyuip.durban. The closing date for objections will be January 5, 2023.
