City re-opens fourteen beaches ahead of festive season

The eThekwini Municipality has re-opened more beaches following improved water quality standards.

ON September 16, the municipality issued a notice stating that Durban beaches were closed due to the last round of testing showing high levels of E. coli bacteria in the water after the recent floods that destroyed the local infrastructure.

This comes as a result of rampant sewage spills that continue to plague the city.

Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the number of beaches that had been re-opened yesterday were 14, and those remaining closed were seven around the city.

“The decision to open these beaches was taken after recent water tests conducted by experts confirmed that beach water is at an acceptable level for recreational activities,” he stated.

Mayisela revealed that the beaches open for swimming include Point, uShaka, Addington, South, Wedge, North, Bay of Plenty, Battery, Country Club, Brighton, Reunion, Pipeline, Toti Main, and Warner beaches.

He added, “The following beaches remain closed until further notice. These are Westbrook, Bronze, Laguna Beach, Thekwini Beach, uMhlanga, uMdloti and uMgababa beaches. The municipality is continuously monitoring water quality at all beaches to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.”
