Appeal nets bumper donation

A resident responds to an appeal by a local knitting group.

AN appeal in Berea Mail for people to donate wool to the Beanies and Blankets for Babies knitting group resulted in the group receiving a large consignment of wool and a knitting machine, from Berea Mail reader and Morningside resident, Cyril Gradwell.

Snoeks Desmond from the Beanies and Blankets for Babies knitting group was overwhelmed at the generous donation which will see the group knitting items for new moms at the King Dinizulu Hospital in Sydenham.

“I had bought a knitting machine and boxes of wool for my domestic worker, Cindy Dazini, as a possible way for her to start her own little business, but realised she wasn’t too keen. My friend Irene Scrazzolo has since offered to help Cindy learn to sew, but we still had the wool in my garage. I spoke to Cindy about donating the machine and wool to the knitting group after seeing the article in the paper, and she was happy to agree,” said Cyril.

He tracked down Snoeks, who was extremely grateful for the donation. She said she had had a few other donations of wool at the drop off zones at local shopping centres, Berciles, Umhanga Rocks Drive, Busy Needles, Windermere Centre and One Stitch at a Time in Glenwood Centre.

She said the group would be doing an Easter drive and urged the community to help it give a beanie, blanket and jersey to babies born at the hospital this Easter.

Knit, crochet or donate yellow, green or white wool for this drive.
