Spotlight on Cancer Champion Angelique Lynch

At 28, Angelique Lynch was faced not only with the biggest fight of her life, but for her life. Now, at 42, the La Lucia business executive is celebrating 13 years of remission, and is not shy to share her story of triumph over illness.

“WHEN was the last time you did something that scared you? I’ve always lived life to the full, even before breast cancer. So what changed? Time. And how much of it I had left.”

As a cancer champion she’s done incredible things despite cancer – and sometimes even because of it.

“I’ll never forget getting the call in October 2008, ironically Breast Cancer Awareness month. It brought me to my knees. I had two invasive tumours (larger than 5 cm) and they were growing fast. We needed to act quickly.”

She’d just got engaged to the love of her life, Les, when she found a lump. After a whirlwind of blood tests, mammograms and a biopsy, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Stage 3 HER2-positive breast cancer.

“I have a fighting spirit and through my younger years I succeeded at many things – one of my proudest moments was getting my Black Belt and 2nd Dan in Karate and getting my Protea colours. I have many medals to show for that, and some scars. I was known for my ‘migeri’ – a front kick that would put my opponents down. I also got put down a number of times. But I always got back up.”

At the time she was diagnosed, Angelique was at the prime of her career. Convinced that if she curled up and withdrew from the world, she was not going to make it, she chose to work full time through her treatment.

“I was determined to build the best strategy I could to survive. I wasn’t going to let this disease consume my life or stop me exploring my dreams and aspirations.”
