Aweh! Find out what’s popping in Durban this weekend

The entire funeral of Queen Elizabeth will be screened on the big screen at Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo.

THIS weekend offers a host of activities in and around Durban. Tune in for a performance by the Durban Symphonic Choir, take a guided walk in Durban’s iconic Botanic Gardens or pay tribute to England’s Queen Elizabeth II along with your community.

Here’s a list of events coming up.

Durban Symphonic Choir, Friday, September 16

The Durban Symphonic Choir presents Sacred Choral Music with Organ on Friday, September 16 at St Cyprian’s Anglican Church. The concert is hosted on a donation basis, and all funds raised will support Kerr House, a home that offers shelter to abused women. The concert features organist Christopher Cockburn and soloists Sibonelo Mbanjwa and Jennifer McCaul.
Concertgoers can enjoy snacks and refreshments after the concert in the church hall, and it’s all for a good cause. Kerr House is also accepting donations of groceries and women’s clothes, over and above the monetary donation to attend the concert. Concertgoers who wish to donate items can bring them along to the show. St Cyprian’s Anglican Church is located at 603 Umbilo Road.

Botanic Gardens, Saturday, September 17

September in the southern hemisphere is known as the start of the spring season. Durban Botanic Gardens guide Christine Sole will lead a walk on Saturday, September 17 that will focus on the general history and uses of medicinal plants. The walk will also feature the medicinal plants found within the gardens. The outing will be one and a half hours long, starting at 09:15 for 09:30 and ending at the Visitors Complex at 11:00.

Entrance is from John Zikhali Road (formerly Sydenham Road) where parking is available. The fee for the walk is R60 per person and R40 for pensioners and children. Children U10 are free.

St Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Saturday, September 17

The Ken Gillings Memorial Lecture will take place at St Cyprian’s Anglican Church on Saturday, September 17 at 14:00. Graeme Fuller will present a talk about his visit with Gillings to Egypt and Libya. The cost is R30 for members and R50 for visitors. Prayer Service, Sunday, September 18

St Cyprian’s Anglican Church will host a memorial service in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth on Sunday, September 18 at 09:00. The service will include a piper for the lament, and a trumpeter will play to accompany the organist. For more information, contact the church on 031 2053710.

Musical tribute, Sunday, September 18

Pianist Christopher Duigan is presenting a solo concert at St Agnes Church in Kloof on Sunday, September 18 at 15:00. He will be playing Elgar’s Nimrod from Enigma Variations as a gesture of respect to the passing of the Queen in Sunday’s concert. Bookings at www.musicrevival.co.za.

Watch the funeral on the big screen, Monday, September 19

The entire funeral of Queen Elizabeth will be screened on the big screen at Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo on Monday, September 19, from 09:00.
Food and coffee will be on sale, with bacon-and-egg rolls for breakfast, and the bar will be open. The Rhumbelow is at 42 Cunningham Rd, Umbilo. For more information, call 082 499 8636.
