Armed gang storm Greyville shop

Five suspects were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and the possession of stolen property.

A GANG of four men, armed with knives and firearms, were arrested after they stormed a shop on Mathews Meyiwa Road (Stamford Hill Road) on Friday, September 9 at 17:30.

A provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Brigadier Jay Naicker confirmed that the suspects stole cigarettes, cellphones, and an undisclosed amount of cash before they fled the scene.

“Durban Central police responded swiftly to the report of a robbery and arrested four men as well as the driver of the getaway vehicle,” said Naicker.

The five suspects aged between 20 and 28 are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court for unlawful possession of firearms and the possession of stolen property.

More than 2 100 arrests across KwaZulu-Natal

During the past week (September 5 -11), 2 165 individuals were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal during police operations – 118 were arrested for robberies and 84 were arrested for burglaries. SAPS announced the statistics in a statement.

According to SAPS, crime-combatting operations were carried out across all 11 districts in the province.  Police arrested 407 people who were found in possession of drugs, 34 who were found in possession of firearms, and 52 who were found in possession of stolen property. During the same period, 579 were arrested for assaults, 56 for murder and 61 for rape. Police also detained 175 for shoplifting, 117 for theft and 76 for malicious damage to property. Ten were arrested for theft of motor vehicles and nine for carjacking.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Major General Phumelele Makoba, welcomed the arrests.
