Aweh! Find out what’s popping in Durban this weekend

All aboard! This weekend there is a stream train ride, spiritual workshop, and of course, Comrades Marathon.

THIS weekend offers a host of events and activities. With plenty of events on the go on Saturday, Durbanites are spoilt for choice. Browse a Glenwood market, or head into the tranquil setting of Bothas Hill for a spiritual workshop – these are just a few of the options for this weekends ‘to-do list.  On Sunday, the much loved Comrades Marathon returns after Covid-19 disruptions, head to the sidelines to soak up the electric atmosphere!

Saturday, August 27

Glenwood market

The Citadel Market will take place at The Port Natal Citadel, 455 Esther Roberts Road in Glenwood, on Saturday, August 27 from 12:00 until 16:00. Funds raise support iThemba Lethu Breast Milk Bank. There will be stalls  in the hall as well as outside the venue, and parking will be available where car guards will be in attendance. Spiritual workshop

A spiritual teaching workshop will be held at Décor Art Interiors in Botha’s Hill on Saturday, August 27 from 10:00 until 13:00. This is the first in a series of one-day, in-person workshops conveying teachings from spirit guides. This week’s workshop will be facilitated by Adrian Rorvik who is known to many as a radio presenter, travel writer, publicist, and “ghostbuster”. He is embarking on a series of in-person workshops in KZN. The initial workshop covers the topics of spirit guides; planes of existence beyond the physical realm; and delves into life after death, reincarnation, suicide, karma, dreams, soul-mates- and more. Memorial lecture 

The Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) invites the Durban community to join them for a day of celebration and reflection to remember their founder, Paddy Kearney. This year would have marked Kearney’s 80th birthday at the end of August. The annual Paddy Kearney Memorial Lecture will take place at 14:00 on Saturday, August 27. The guest lecturer is Minister Pravin Gordhan, who knew Kearney well. Gordhan will speak via video link as he is not able to attend in person. To attend the lecture, community members will need to register via this link. At 16:00, there will be a birthday tea party. The commemorative celebrations will come to a close at 17:00 in Emmanuel Cathedral with a special Memorial Mass. Durban Chamber Choir will sing a renaissance setting, O Magnum Mysterium, by Victoria.

Steam train

All aboard! The Umgeni Steam Railway is offering steam train trips on Saturday, August 27 to the Inchanga Craft Market. there are four trips on the cards, at 8.30, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:30. The market will be in full swing with dozen of stalls offering family-friendly locally-sourced fare. There is also a tea garden offering a range of light meals and snacks, a play area and picnic site. The market will operate from 08:00 until 14:00. The Inchanga Railway Museum will also be open for tours; as will the model railway, Thomas & Friends, be operational in the Modeller’s hut. Tours will be offered through the shed to see the 110 year old Steam locomotive, Maureen, under repairs as well as tour our vintage coaches. There are no ATM’s on site, nor card facilities. Comrades Marathon

The Comrades Marathon returns this year with the down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban where runners will cross the finish line at Moses Mabhida Stadium.  Soak up the festive atmosphere from sidelines along the route. For more information, visit: https://comrades.com.
