Berea Colleges host epic sports day

Berea Technical College and Berea College of Technology hosted their annual Sports Day at the Hoy Park Sports Grounds in Durban to enjoy a much-awaited event after two years of Covid recess.

ON Friday, August 19, more than 3 000 Berea Technical College and Berea College of Technology students descended onto the Hoy Park Sports Grounds in Durban to enjoy a much-awaited event after two years of Covid recess – the Akesidale Let’s Play Faculty vs Faculty Sports Day.

The programme line-up included an array of sporting codes, indigenous games like morabaraba, a sack race, an egg-and-spoon race, as well as the traditional games of soccer, netball, basketball and volleyball. Other attractions were the cheerleading squad and tug-of-war. And for some brain flexing, the event included a chess tournament.

According to the schools’ PR Manager, Jesse Naidoo, the event was a major success. “The colleges have a recreational programme that includes an annual sports day, and so this event after two years was full of excitement. It was wonderful that our students could enjoy the event; spirits were high, the atmosphere was great, there was good food and fun was had by all.”

Students from the faculties of Engineering, Business Studies, Hospitality and Tourism, IT, Commerce and the School of Occupations and Vocations went head-to-head for the 2022 Sportsmen and Sportswomen titles. Participants and spectators dressed in a specific colour code, and on the day, depicted a rainbow nation as the field beamed with colours.

Live entertainment, Zumba and the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) were all part of the programme. Students took the time to de-stress by taking part in the Zumba sessions and also supported a worthy cause by donating blood.

“It wasn’t just for the students; it was an overall team-building exercise for students to see their lecturers participating and for lecturers to get involved in the activities alongside students. It was a lovely day overall,” said Naidoo.
