Iqraa Trust hosts new maths development programme

Iqraa Trust recently hosted an exciting new initiative at the Iqraa Trust Knowledge Centre called the BLEND Learning Mathematics through Play programme in preparation to roll the initiative out to 250 primary schools across KwaZulu-Natal.

THE Iqraa Trust recently partially sponsored and hosted an exciting new initiative called the BLEND Learning Mathematics through Play programme at the organisation’s Iqraa Trust Knowledge Centre, in preparation to roll out the innovative project to 250 primary schools and 1 000 Grade R to 3 teachers.

According to Dr Mahmoud Baker, chairman of Iqraa Trust, BLEND Learning Mathematics through Play is a pilot project funded by The Lego Foundation and implemented by VVOB Education for Development and the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME).

“Children in the early grades learn naturally through playful engagement with the world. Drawing on this and an increasing body of research that supports play-based learning strategies, the project partners have developed a course to support teachers in introducing these methods into their teaching of mathematics,” he said.

Baker says the facilitator orientation hosted at the Iqraa Trust Knowledge Centre on July 29 was part of the final preparation before introducing the teachers from Amajuba, King Cetshwayo, Ugu and Uthukela in KwaZulu-Natal to the programme.

With a long history of improving the level of mathematics education in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa, the trust supports hundreds of organisations and thousands of students throughout South Africa by means of grants and donations.
