Guided walk series at Durban Botanic Gardens returns this July

The year’s focus will be on how the Durban Botanic Gardens has developed into the botanic garden it is now.

AFTER two years of suspension due to Covid-19 regulations, and just in time for Durban’s winter season, monthly Saturday morning guided walks will be resuming at the Durban Botanic Gardens.

Led by walk guide, Christine Sole, the walks will be 1.5 hours long, starting and ending at the Visitors’ Centre at the Durban Botanic Gardens. The entrance is on John Zikhali Road (formerly Sydenham Road).

“This year’s walk will incorporate history as we move through the Gardens and come across historic reminders of the Gardens’ connections with the Durban city. The focus will be on how the Durban Botanic Gardens has developed into the botanic garden it is now, what is happening on the ground at present and future plans,” said Sole.

Sole says that the theme for the first outing on Saturday, July 9 at 09:30, is Our Durban Botanic Gardens – then and now.

The resumption of the popular Music at the Lake concerts is a Durban Botanic Gardens drawcard for Durban residents, as are the monthly walks for strollers who are interested in getting a closer look at what’s happening in one of Durban’s favourite outdoor attractions.

The fee for the walk is R60 per person, R40 for pensioners, and children under 10 years old are given free entry.

Booking for the walk may be done through the Durban Botanic Gardens administration officer, Thamsanqa Mbhele, via email at Thamsanqa.Mbhele2@durban.gov.za or via phone on 031 322 4019.
