Durban Pride is making a comeback!

The parade this year will include a protest march and vigil to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community members who lost their lives during the lockdown.

THE Durban Pride Parade raises the rainbow flag to mark the celebration of diversity on the grounds of sex, gender, and sexual orientation.

Due to Covid-19 lockdown regulations, the Durban Pride parade was suspended for two years in 2020 and 2021.

However, according to the Durban Pride community, discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community was not halted in any way.

“Regrettably, abuse, ridicule, homelessness, domestic violence, gender-based violence and hate crimes towards LGBTI+ people did not observe the Covid-19 lockdown,” says the Durban Pride community on their Facebook Page.

“Some people could not access services and much-needed treatment or support; some were without homes; others were kicked out of home or locked in with perpetrators. Many were violated and murdered for being LGBTI or perceived to be LGBTI,” said Durban Pride.

In their statement posted on Facebook, they added that the civil unrest and recent flooding has left Durban residents, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, displaced and financially burdened.

The Durban Pride community says that the upcoming Durban Pride Parade is set to take place this weekend on Saturday, June 25 at Gugu Dlamini Park in Durban Central.

“No one is free until we are all free,” they concluded in their statement.
