R1.5 million worth of drugs seized in Berea

The South African Hawks and the SAPS worked together to seize more than R1m worth of drugs, as well as firearms, in an abandoned car in Berea.

YESTERDAY afternoon on May 24, Hawks officers received a tip about a vehicle parked in the Berea area, possibly carrying illegal drugs and firearms. Police found more than R1m worth of drugs after searching the vehicle, as well as multiple firearms.

According to Captain Simphiwe Mlongo of the South African Police Services (SAPS), the operation was carried out by Hawks members from Durban and the Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation, working together with the SAPS Explosives Unit.

“Members received information about a vehicle which was containing drugs and firearms at Berea Centre in Durban,” said Mlongo.
Authorities proceeded to the centre and found the vehicle parked with no one inside.

“A search was conducted, and police found two bags containing 30 000 mandrax tablets to the street value of approximately R1.5m. Six firearms, one stun grenade, and 106 live rounds of ammunition were also found in the same vehicle,” said the police captain.

Mlongo said the seized firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country.

No arrests have been made at this stage, and the investigation continues.
