Roads flooded, power out in Glenwood and Umbilo

As heavy rains continue, many Glenwood and Umbilo residents will weather the storm in the dark.

SEVERAL roads have flooded across Umbilo and Glenwood as heavy rainfall continues across Durban.

Ward 33 Councilor, Sakhile Mngadi said the inclement weather has added insult to injury for residents across the ward battling lengthy power outages.

He said residents on Bartle Road and James Henderson Crescent reported flooding on their roads.

“Some drains are blocked after weeds were removed recently. Foliage is sometimes swept into the storm drains,” explained Mngadi.

As rainfall continues, many residents will be facing the storm in the dark.

“The longest standing power outage has been ongoing for 72 hours at Lantern Heath, a block of flats on Magwaza Maphalala Road. Another outage on Fenniscowels Road has lasted 24 hours. On Oliver Lea Drive residents have been without power for about 30 hours. Another outage on Cato Road has been ongoing for four hours. I haven’t been able to log a fault or get a reference number for this outage. We are engaging with the City manager to find out what’s going on,”said Mngadi.

He called for residents to stay indoors.

“It seems as though the storm is still in full force. I’d advise residents to stay at home. If you need to travel, please be cautious on the roads,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality issued a flood warning on it’s Facebook Page, saying their Disaster Management Unit is on high alert as water levels continue to rise.
