Hospice for women marks 71 years

ST Cyprian's Anglican will host a fundraising recital on Saturday, April 2, to procure funding for the Durban Hospice for women, Kerr House which celebrates 71 years of service this year.

ST Cyprian’s Anglican will host a fundraising recital on Saturday, April 2, to procure funding for the Durban Hospice for women, Kerr House, and to celebrate the work they do to provide a safe haven for women.

Accomplished organist from St Paul’s Anglican Church, Melvin Peters, and St Cyprian’s resident organist, Andrew Bethke will be playing at the church from 15:00 for the first hour of the event.

St Cyprian’s Parish Pastor, Dane Elsworth said the performance will then be followed by snacks and refreshments that will be available to guests in the Parish Hall.

“It’s a fundraiser so everyone is welcome to come and support,” said Elsworth.

In 1951 the Vicars of St Paul’s and St Cyprian’s Anglican Churches established Kerr House as a shelter for ‘Women in Crisis’. Now, 71 years later, Kerr House continues to provide professional care for women who have experienced some form of trauma and abuse.

According to their website Kerr House provides clean and comfortable accommodation for up to 17 mothers and children, three meals a day, skills training, counselling by resident social workers, therapeutic group work and individual rehabilitation services.

Elsworth has been involved with Kerr House for nearly 30 years, “I’ve seen women come to Kerr House with their children and nothing but the clothes on their back. Some of them have never worked, because they’ve been so restricted in the relationship. We see these frail and broken people come in and when they come back to thank us, you would never believe that they’re the same people. I’ve seen women completely change their situations,” said Elsworth.

Elsworth said the monthly running costs to operate the local hospice are in the region of R120 000 per month, “We can only do the work that we do with the support of the community. It is thanks to the generosity of businesses, trusts, individuals and the Department of Social Development that Kerr House can continue on in an environment of increasing gender-based-violence and femicide,” he said.

People wishing to attend the fundraiser must RSVP to saintcyprian@telkomsa.net or to phone the Parish Office on 031 205 3710.
