Satellite leak detector will address water challenges, says City

The detector is said to be a gamechanger for the City.

ETHEKWINI Municipality is planning to introduce a satellite leak detector that will assist to detect water leaks in the City.

The municipality said in a statement that the detector is at an advanced stage and will be a game changer for the City as it will help to provide solutions to current water challenges.

eThekwini mayor, councillor Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the initiative saying the new detector will provide sustainable solutions to water challenges facing eThekwini.

“This will assist to increase revenue by reducing water wasted through leaks,” he said.

Mayor Kaunda said currently the municipality is in partnership with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) which has constructed the Remix Demonstration Plant to demonstrate new energy efficient and environmentally friendly desalination technology.

“This technology will also provide sustainable solutions to water challenges facing the City.

“These initiatives are evidence that the City is working tirelessly on projects that provide solutions to water challenges. This means improved availability of water for residents,” he said.

As the country is gearing up for National Water Week, residents are reminded that South Africa has become water scarce. As such, water resources are under pressure with a growing demand for water supply.

“To ensure water security for all, a collaborative approach is required from various stakeholders to respond to water challenges and advance water solutions,” he said.

Kaunda appealed to the public to work with the City to respond to water challenges.

“We encourage residents to use water wisely and to report acts of theft and vandalism of water infrastructure through illegal connections, leaks and any other illegal activities. This will reduce constant interruption of water supply and ensure water security for all residents,” he said.
