Overport Clinic to host TB awareness day

The clinic invites the community to stop by to learn more about TB prevention and treatment.

AS Tuberculosis (TB) awareness is raised over the month of March, the Overport Clinic will do its part to spread the word and educate on Friday, March 4.

TB causes thousands of deaths in South Africa and abroad each year.

The month of March is dedicated to raising awareness, culminating on March 24 when World TB Day is observed across the globe. Speaking to Berea Mail, Overport Clinic manager, Jabulani Khumalo said TB is an airborne disease that anyone can catch.

“TB is regarded as an opportunistic infection and an HIV-positive patient is at risk because TB attacks patients with a low immune system. When a patient is HIV positive, we worry about their TB status,” said Khumalo.

The clinic invites members of the community to stop by during the day to learn more about TB treatment and prevention.

The awareness day will kick off at 08:00 and run until 16:00.

According to the South African Government website more than 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries where nutritional requirements are scarcely met.

“TB Day on 24 March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch’s announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch’s discovery opened the way toward diagnosing and curing tuberculosis,” reads the site.

The clinic is located at 472 Ridge Road. Call 031 322 8988.
